Universities have been considered key elements in the regions development process. In Brazil, we experience a higher education expansion phase, largely outside the major centers, in so-called medium-sized towns. This article aims to understand the recent expansion of higher education in Pau dos Ferros and changes in terms of urban dynamics and its regional actions. For the research, we refer studies on the relationship between higher education and medium-sized towns. Empirically we seek data on the housing boom and its concentration near the campus of UERN, and to check their regional actions work with the data of student enrollment. It was found that only 25% of students are of Pau dos Ferros, the rest come from 64 municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Paraíba.
