The environmental issue, wich efflectively emerged as a global agenda from the 1970s, is a determinant element of the contemporary conceptions about development, manly due to the inclusion of sustainability in recent discussions. As a consequence, appeared in the last decades, new ways to think about strategies that approach economic development with the socio-environmetal issues, mostly the respect for local communities and nature preservation. In this context, old concepts are transformed, such as the rural development, as new practices and concepets show up, like geodiversity and geoparks, in order to cover this new paradigm that is imposed to the world. Therefore, the present article seeked to establish, from a specific review of thematic scientific production, the relationship between the geoparks and the rural development, as well as expand reflections on the implementation of geoparks and their possible implications and contributions to rural development in Brazil.
