This paper analyzes the current situation of water supply in São Gonçalo, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, under of the concept of hydrossocial scarcity, theory of the political ecology of water,, in which it considers that the circulation of water is directly associated with the circulation of money and capital in urban spaces. In a first stage we used data of the last demographic census of IBGE in the year of 2010 and also information from the Municipal Sanitation Plan of São Gonçalo. Subsequently, a field survey was carried out in two census tracts of the municipality with low socioeconomic indexes: one with water supply by general network and the other with supply through wells. It was found that the situation of access to treated water within the municipality favors the areas with higher indicators socio and economically penalizing the poorest population, deepening the socio-spatial segregation already existing in the municipality.
