The territorial approach since 2003 has been used in Brazil as a sustainable rural development strategy that involves the participation of different stakeholders in the discussion and implementation of public policies. This article provides a brief overview of recent public policies implemented in rural areas through the territorial approach and their links to family farming. It covers the creation of dialogue spaces of civil society and governments, the diversity in the rural world and its multifunctionality, bringing to the discussion the importance of traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity in the preservation of environmental resources. By reviewing issues related to the territorial approach, highlighting a number of factors related to the strategy that has contributed to the process of creation of dialogue spaces and implementation of public policies for rural as well as presenting a more generally their advances and challenges.
