Regional development in a semiperipheral social formation: the case of Brazil

In this article I have the purpose of (in dialogue with selected interpreters of Brazilian social thought) examining regional development in Brazil, a semi-peripheral social formation, from the perspective of the formation of its territory. Between the introduction and the final considerations, follow three main sections: First, a review is made of the unequal character of capitalist development and its historical-geographical implications. Then, in a longer section, attention falls on the historical formation of the Brazilian territory, based on the hypothesis that the meaning of colonization extends over the independent nation, resulting in its condition of semi-peripheral social formation. Finally, the economically, socially, politically and geographically uneven development process is analyzed, which, in Brazil, has led to the continued disorganization of the territory in regions.
