This article aims to discuss some metaphors related to the Brazilian expansion of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) found in documentary and bibliographic sources beetween 2015 and 2020. The terms Ivory towers, Castles of knowledge, White elephants, Cathedrals of the desert and Factories without chimneys were grouped to discuss the university enterprise as a motor for regional development in the interior of the country from the 2000s onwards. Public and private university expansion brings to fore new and old metaphors to designate a posture towards science, the institution, its location, and infrastructure in the territory. As final results, interpretations of the emphasis, objectives, and counterpoints of the criticism are presented, without the intention of overcoming them, but to qualify the debate of the Brazilian HEIs expansion.
