Structural heterogeneity and technology in Brazilian agriculture: considerations based on the 2017 Agricultural Census

This paper aims to provide a portrait of the structure of Brazilian agriculture based on data from the 2006 and 2017 Agricultural Censuses. We sought to explore the potential of the set of information contained in the Agricultural Censuses, those linked to structural and technological aspects of Brazilian agricultural establishments. This paper proposed a measure in the form of an index to express the structural configuration and technological standard of Brazilian agriculture at the micro-regions. The Structural Condition Index (IDEstrut) was constructed based on variables related to access to a set of attributes that contribute to the production process of agricultural establishments. The variables associated with access to technologies in agricultural establishments supported the construction of the Technological Index (IDTec). The construction of the indices enabled spatialization between the 558 Brazilian micro-regions, allowing the identification of spatial patterns of heterogeneity in the agricultural sector in structural and technological dimensions.
