The article comments on the tendency of studies on the urban - rural relationship to signal the possibility of a non - hegemony between the urban and the rural, or vice versa, for a progressive balanced relationship. This scenario is based on the gradual overcoming of industrial society and on the evolution of the roles of the two spheres, based on scientific technological development and on the change of work organization paradigms. Adds that the experience of some "Transition Towns", shows this to be theoretically possible, guessing that the recent process of structural transformation of Brazilian agriculture, from an agrarian past, which related land tenure and rural life, to an agricultural present, meaning the intensification of production, created spaces of prosperity. The work is based on academic texts and on research in the databases of IBGE, showing to be usefully to understand the evolution of the field-city and rural-urban relationship.
