The city of Campos dos Goytacazes has undergone notable territorial transformations in recent years, with changes in its urban landscape that directly impact water resources. Given this scenario, the aim of this article is to analyze the water transformations that this municipality has been going through over the years, identifying and characterizing how water elements are inserted in the urban area today and evaluating how urban growth and occupations in areas of environmental vulnerability impact them. To this end, bibliographic and documentary reviews were carried out, in addition to field visits and photographic surveys to create thematic maps. It was concluded that this municipality has water elements with great landscape potential, but which, contradictorily, were for a long time seen as obstacles to urban development. In the current context, these elements must be seen as important elements of the Open Space System and fundamental for urban drainage.
