How to work the geographic object in regional studies? Reflections about periodization and thematic maps

In the scope of regional science some theoretical and methodological challenges are required to work the geographic object in the regional studies. The objective of this article is to collaborate in the debate about theoretical and methodological proposals adequate to deal with the issue of regional development. In order to do so, the concepts of periodization, description and thematic maps are presented and discussed in order to highlight the potential of such concepts to capture the geographic object in regional studies. The results show that the periodization exercise can both contribute to the construction of the methodology and can be a result in itself. The use of thematic maps in the regional studies allows the elaboration of cartography capable of conducting speeches, extrapolating the idea of simple illustration.
