Trends in scientific production on the challenges of basic sanitation in the Brazilian semi-arid region

The aim of this study is to discuss the main challenges for basic sanitation in the Brazilian semi-arid region, a Brazilian regional delimitation composed of 1,427 municipalities from various units of the Union, through an integrative review of the literature, vis a vis the need for expansion towards a possible universalization of the provision of services of this nature. To fulfill this objective, an integrative literature review was carried out using 5 databases, with a final result of 15 articles. After analyzing and discussing the manuscripts, it is concluded that there is a diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches in research, with no studies directly related to the issue addressed. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the semi-arid territory has its own characteristics that demand greater investments in policies for access and universalization of sanitation services, indicating that the problems identified tend to be related to weak management and low social participation.
