Inter-regional trade in Brazil: From the end of the archipelago to an asymmetric integration – 1943-2006

This paper, making use of six interstate trade matrices, put together by the first time, provides empirical support on the “Archipelago Brazil” of the years preceding the Second World War and on the impressive growth of the interstate trade flows after the end of the 1950s. Until then trade among the Brazilian regions was still in an embryonic phase, most of it being undertaken between the states of each region, the result of the absence of a national network of roadways or railways. The 50s and the 60s witnessed a wide roadways construction program, which linked almost all the national territory, making the truck the dominant means of cargo transport as far as interregional trade is concerned. This fact brought about the definite elimination of the state of economic isolation which has existed during four and a half centuries of the country’s history. The paper still describes how the process regional market unification unequally affected the Brazilian territory, given cause to different impacts on the development of its peripheral regions.
