This article analyzes the rationality of suicide prevention policies, from Rio Grande do Sul, relating them to theoretical concepts from the field of Regional Development. It discusses public policies of mental health and the treatment of risk factors for suicide, considering different perspectives of the problem. The phenomenon is analyzed based on data from the Mortality Information System, according to an ecological study. It is considered that there is a rationality proper to the theme, linked to a clinical and treatment logic, according to an individualizing approach. It is noted that these approaches reduce interdisciplinary work and the participation of other fields of science in the debate on suicide prevention. We conclude that the field of Regional Development is capable of innovating suicide prevention actions within the scope of public policies, by including the territory as an agent in promoting solutions to the phenomenon.
